Honoring a Shared Legacy, Building a Shared Future
The relationship between Black and Jewish communities is woven from the threads of history, struggle, resilience, and hope. Both communities have faced persecution, discrimination, and challenges unique to their experiences—yet interconnected in the broader tapestry of humanity’s quest for respect and dignity.
Our mission is to honor that shared legacy, acknowledge the complexities and differences within and between our communities, and chart a path forward grounded in empathy, education, and shared action.
A Single Friendship Can Shift History.
TThe Randolph L. White Foundation is rooted in the courageous friendship between Randolph L. White, a Black janitor, and Dr. William Goodwin, a Jewish physician at UVA Hospital.
In the 1940s, Dr. Goodwin recognized Mr. White’s leadership and helped him become UVA Hospital’s first Black manager. Their bond sparked a legacy of progress, opening doors for Black workers, advancing desegregation, driving medical innovation, and founding one of Virginia’s oldest Black newspapers.

We believe that the foundation of Black Jewish relations rests upon mutual respect, open dialogue, and a commitment to dismantling the structures of racism and antisemitism. Our mission is to cultivate an enduring partnership that thrives on education, celebrates cultural richness, and mobilizes our collective strengths to confront problems wherever they emerge.

The Randolph L. White Foundation convenes diverse perspectives to address the challenges facing our communities. With a particular focus on strengthening Black–Jewish relations, the Foundation creates forums for dialogue, collaboration, and shared action. By amplifying underrepresented voices, we foster inclusive solutions that drive measurable impact where we live and work.
